Today’s Sari Sari Story is a a Waray Tale, Sandangaw. Sandangaw is one of the top choices this week in our home. This is the tale of a small boy who overcomes great obstacles despite his tiny size. My middle son Oz is captivated by the smallness of Sandangaw and his incredible courage. When I asked how Sandangaw overcame his obstacles Oz answered, “He worked hard and was brave.’ Hallelujah!

The tale of Sandangaw is a sweet story accompanied with beautiful art. I believe that all children could identify with Sandangaw’s character even if they are taller than one handspan. Children are often told they aren’t capable or cannot participate simply because of their size. Through the events and character development we learn that size does not always matter and that children (and little people) are more capable than we know.
Through curating a small Filipino children’s book collection I have learned a bit about their story telling, cultural heritage and also mythology. Filipino tales and mythology often have a darker side and some aspects of just plain silliness. For example, in Sandangaw’s tale, when the eagle is sleeping his eyes are wide open and when he is awake his eyes are pressed shut. It was confusing for me but Oz picked up on it right away. Tomorrow we will get into the darker mythology when we learn about Kalipay and the Tiniest Tiktik/ Si Kalipay Ug ang Kinagamyang Tiktik! I am excited!
