Neighborhood Hits: San Juan

Neighborhood Hits: San Juan

There are a thousand small cities within our metro and I could spend a lifetime exploring them all. One of my favorite ways to explore Manila is by foot (#ManilaByFoot). You get such a different view of the city because you are experiencing it at a slower pace which causes you to be more mindful and aware of you surroundings. Lately, my husband and I have been spending our dates walking to Greenhills, San Juan and exploring the area. Here are a few gems we’ve been loving.

Part ll of this series can be found here.

i have a weird obsession with street level entrances. any restaurant that welcomes me in from the sidewalk ,like a home is my kind of restaurant. you can read more about my affinity here.

I legitimately remember the first time I ate at Salad Stop at BGC High Street in 2014. The most remarkable trait of Salad Stop is the consistency, it is good EVERY SINGLE TIME AT EVERY SINGLE LOCATION. Now, you know I’m a Manila girl at heart but I cannot give this compliment to every popular restaurant in Manila. You may have even heard friends say, ‘Go now, while it’s still good.’ Sad, but true. However, Salad Stop is an old reliable. I love variety so we decided to try a different branch of Salad Stop up in San Juan and I am so happy, it’s location is surrounded by hidden gems we’ve gotten to explore.

|CAROUSEL CREAMERY|

As we walked up to Cullinan Building, where Salad Stop is located, I spotted the much anticipated and talked about Carousel Creamery. I have had friends tell me about this ice cream parlor and had not yet visited. How could I say no since I was eating a salad for lunch. Ice cream was in order! Carousel Creamery prides themselves on having 101 flavors, and they really do! Some of them are wild combinations and others are more perfect pairs but nonetheless, they stay true to having 101 flavors.

The interiors are a welcoming atmosphere to stay a while. They are reminiscent of the iconic creamery from the 1950’s. It isn’t just a quick stop but a place to slow down and enjoy a delicious ice cream together. In fact, you must sit down at a table to order- ha!

Some of the interesting flavors are: beer + chicharon, strawberry + basil, bacon + cheese, pumpkin spice, ube + pastillas, vanilla toffee crunch and speculoos to name a few. Oh and with the holidays coming upon us, eggnog as well. :)

Manila, you’re a treasure trove. May the universe grant me more years here to explore hundreds of more barangays than I have today. I love you forever.
